The Navajo are a deeply spiritual people. Thus, many acts of their lives contain a sacred dimension and these acts must be performed in a specific way to maintain the balance and the harmony between the self and the other elements of a complex universe. 

While the claim is often made that Navajo weavings are not fragile, they are not eternal and require care. The fact that the native weaver formerly buried a finished rug in damp sand to cleanse it wholly disregards more contemporary knowledge of better ways by which to achieve that end. 

Wendy Ponca is an Osage Indian who has won numerous awards for her textile designs. Her work is featured in permanent museum collections throughout the nation. "Wah-sha-she" was inspired by the broadcloth blankets worn by the Osage as they relinquished their buckskins over 100 years ago.
